No Blue No Green

This sequence of Photogram Cyanotype seascapes, No blue, No green, were inspired by the legendary ocean researcher Sylvia Earle and were produced by manipulating wet shreds of plastic, sea salt and UV light.

Using plastic strands to create the image is not dissimilar in method to that of Anna Atkins’ photographs of British Algae and I drew on this historical association and process to attract attention to the issues surrounding plastic pollution in the world’s oceans, in a way that was unfamiliar and unexpected to the viewer.
